Anchorage Alaska real estate question? Why is real estate in Anchorage Alaska so expensive?? In surrounding cities, of anchorage, i can buy a single family home for just 150,000, but in Anchorage, that'll only get me a decent apartment to a crappy townhome. There is the obvious answer like " Anchorage is the biggest city and all those other cities are small in population", but i just would like to consider other options. Thanks!
Are there lofts available for purchase in Anchorage, Alaska? My search has not turned up any positive results. I assume Anchorage doesn't have much of a warehouse district if any, but I would love to be suprised. In my search for a home I either want a loft or a single family residence - not a condo, townhouse, or ZLL. Thanks for your help!

I need help with alaska travel plans for next summer.? I'm planning on flying into anchorage and renting a car. I'm travelling with my Mom and planning on ten days. I'm planning to drive to Denali, spending 1.5 days there, fairbanks to fly to Barrow for a day, drive south again to Glennallen and Valdez, go for a fjord tour from Valdez, ferry to Whittier and drive back to Anchorage, shop in Anchorage and fly home. I was in Alaska once before (Anchorage, Seward, Denali) and spent six days there. The Seward marine tours were a bust both days due to bad ocean weather so I thought I might have an easier time from Valdez. Any ideas?
What is there to do in/around Whittier, Alaska? Taking a cruise in September ending in Whittier, and plan to spend a few days (maybe up to a week) there, or in the Anchorage area before flying home. What "day-trips" from that area can you recommend?
What should I do about my contractor building next door and has torn down my fence? The contractor who built my home is now developing a complex , behind my home.,of 15-18 townhomes to sell. He went past the property line the city just surveyed , with a back hoe he knocked my fence down over a yr and half ago then nailed some boards across it in a different color and going the opposite way not even straight. He refuses to hear my repeated requests to fix it .There are 2-3 ft holes that drop into a 25 ft hole. I have a 6 yr old who cannot go outside due to this. The dirt slides everyday and we become closer to falling in.Then he vibrates the land and 5 other homes also with a steam roller and dump trucks --new cracks are developing all over the house. I need assistance. I don't know what legal steps to take and I was selling my home --wonder why there are no prospects. Contractor was informed of sale 1 yr ago. I need HELP I am sliding off the hill in Anchorage, Alaska.
Is geothermal heating in Anchorage, AK plausable, or is it just too cold there? I really want to install geothermal heating in my recently purchased 2,000sqft home in Alaska, but couldn't find any contractors in the area. So, I wonder if it's even doable there, or if it just gets too cold. If it is doable, then how easy and expensive would it be to install myself?
Where is the cheapest place in Alaska to by souvenirs? I will be traveling in fairbanks, denali, talkeetna, anchorage, skagway, ketchikan, juneau, (all the places cruise ships stop). Where is a good place to buy cheap gifts to bring home?

Did You Stevens (R) Alaska had his home raided by the feds? The IRS and the FBI have exercised a search warrant on the home of Senator Ted Stevens in Girdwood. Anchorage Daily News: “All I can say is that agents from the FBI and IRS are currently conducting a search at that residence,” said Dave Heller, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Anchorage office. The search began this afternoon, he said. It’s the only such search warrant currently being served, he said. He directed other questions to the U.S. Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section in Washington. A spokesman there had no comment. Federal investigators and a grand jury looking into public corruption in Alaska have been asking questions about a 2000 remodeling project at Stevens’ home, particularly the involvement of the oil field services firm Veco. You all rememeber ole' Ted right the Bridges to nowhere senator Ok let's address the right wing bullcrap one at a time Spitzer so far is NOT in big trouble it looks like aides overstepped proper bounds let's not overstep yet John B there was a typo............... is that all you have in defense of your Congressmen's position .................. well PHUCK me runnin' what a great defense How can I argue against stupidity Joby sure thers's Jefferson but what about Ney? Is the longest serving Republican Senator in history going to be defeated in November? A new Rasmussen poll shows Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican Senator in history, losing 50-41 to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. Six years ago, Stevens won re-election with 78% of the vote. But since then, he's had some trouble with the FBI. (In addition to his record-setting service, Stevens is reportedly the only senator to have had his home raided by Feds.) According to Rasmussen, one in five Alaskan Republicans (20%) now support Dem Begich. Barack Obama has made Alaska a battleground state, and the campaign hopes a hard-fought race there will help Begich. Are men getting more abusive? I noticed when I was married I wasn't harrassed or treated as badly as when I've been single. When I had a boyfriend I wasn't treated as badly as I am now. What is it about single women that men just assume we are "easy" and treat us with so disrespect. For example, I was waiting for a bus one day and some drunken idiot in Anchorage went by and told me "Get a job barfly!" That's so amazing I've always worked and dont' drink! Another time followed home by a jerk who screamed and yelled at me and called me all kinds of names for driving too slow! I am really getting to hate men really bad in Alaska and men period. Not all men are bad but these rednecks in Alaska don't help matters.
Alaska trip: Which campground in Denali NP? David in Kenai: please answer this if you know. I am going with my boyfriend to Alaska for 7 days leaving 22nd August and returning 29 August home. We know what we want to do; kayak or canoe in Prince William Sound, see the fjords in Kenai, flightseeing over Denali, maybe fishing one day and of course hiking. There are no available campsites at Wonder Lake, so which of the other campgrounds in Denali would you recommend? And from Anchorage do you suggest we go south first or north first? Anyone else have ideas?
Would you do this for more money? My husband was offered a job as a police officer in Alaska. He is currently a correctional officer here in Minnesota. We are close to family here and neither of us have ever been more than 4 hours away from our family! We have a six month old son and I know my mom would be really sad if we moved so far away. He has always wanted to become an police officer and anchorage pd would pay double what he is making now... meaning I wouldn't have to work and could stay home with the baby and have more! Anyone been there or have advice?
How much should a live in Nanny be paid?? They are close friends of mine...? I am 16 years old and this summer i flew alone from Spokane, Washington to Anchorage, Alaska to be a live in Nanny. The kids are 1 1/2 year old twins. One of which has numerous food allergies and other health problems. At the moment i am not being paid anything. I was given $20 to buy some souvenirs 2 weeks ago, but that did not last long. I am supposed to watch the kids all day, getting them up/dressed in the morning, even when both parents are home, and I am in charge of feeding them and taking them on walks. When company comes over i am apparently in charge of their kids as well. And somewhere in there i must have agreed to being the housekeeper as well (I didn't). My sister is telling me to get the hell out of here before she has to come and get me, but i am not the kind of person that could just pick up and go, especially since the father is going on a month long business trip in 2 weeks. Please help me, they want me to come back next summer as well and i don't know what to say!
What is the best airline card for getting miles if you want to fly to Europe from the 50 states(not just 48)? So far Ive found continental that advertises that you need only 50,000 miles to fly from the 50 states to Europe in low demand times. However, from my home state, Alaska, they only have that 50,000 miles coverage from Anchorage. I live in Fairbanks Alaska, Alaska's second largest city. Alaska Airlines charges 80,000 from Fairbanks using British. Hehe:) for some reason I posted in the wrong section. Well try looking up on AlaskaAir how much a Fairbanks to Anchorage ticket is.. Usually around $200 with taxes include or 15000 miles. Very expensive and you end up with two separate tickets instead of one. 3 years ago when I was coming home from Europe I got stuck there for 2 days because of fog and was on 2 tickets(one with miles) to save money. I ended up paying $100 to change the date on the miles ticket and might of spent more than that had I been delayed again.
Federal job in Alaska? I work for a local government in Maryland. I would like to get a federal job in Alaska. Being in government and having contracted in the federal government, I am unclear about where I would go for interview, if I hit the jackpot and win the interview. If work location is in Anchorage, AK, do I need to go to Anchorage for the interview, or can I be interviewed someplace near OPM in DC which is pretty close from my home state of Maryland?
out of state for college? I am presently a senior in high school, and am nearing my graduation date (in May). I live in Arizona, and am an only child. I want to move to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage, and probably continue to live there afterwards. I am close to my mom, but I am very independent. I love my mom, but I wish to leave to Alaska. I understand that it is very hard for her, since she only had one child, and my father is a verbally-abusive maniac. I am torn about leaving my mother behind, and pursuing my own goals, but at the same time, I feel that it is necessary for the both of us. I thought possibly making the situation a bit easier to accept by attending a university here in Arizona, and living on campus for about a semester or two. That way, I am away from home, but can still visit her, then later make the final move to Alaska. I am trying to get her to accept smoothly, so if anyone has any tips on how I can make it easier on both me and my mom, please let me know. I will be paying for them. My father has already reassured me that he wants nothing to do with me. Why I want to move to AK, is personal. I simply have loved it there for a very long time. It is the perfect place for me.
If You Were Poor and Cold, Would You Take? ANCHORAGE, Alaska - In Alaska's native villages, the punishing winter cold is already coming through the walls of the lightly insulated plywood homes, many of the villagers are desperately poor, & heating-oil prices are among the highest in the nation.A few villages are refusing free heating oil from Venezuela, on the patriotic principle that no foreigner has the right to call their president "the devil." Residentspay more than $5 a gallon for oil — or at least $300 a month per household — to heat their homes along the wind-swept coast of the Bering Sea, where temperatures can dip to minus-15., Over the past two years, Citgo, the Venezuelan government's Texas-based oil subsidiary, has given millions of gallons of discounted heating oil to the poor in several states and cities — including New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine — in what is widely seen as an effort by Chavez to embarrass and irritate the U.S. government and make himself look good. October 7, 2006About 150 native villages in Alaska have accepted money for heating oil from Citgo. The oil company does not operate in Alaska, so instead of sending oil, it is donating about $5.3 million to native nonprofit organizations to buy 100 gallons this winter for each of more than 12,000 households. "When you have a dire need and it is a matter of survival for your people, it doesn't matter where, what country, the gift or donation comes from," said Virginia Commack, an elder in the arctic village of Ambler, an impoverished Eskimo community of 280 where residents are paying $7.25 a gallon for fuel. Who cares where it comes from? Devil or not, if I were in dire straits I'd take this fuel. Patriotism can only go so far. I would bet Bush and his family and cronies won't freeze this winter. And I would further bet that Bush doesn't give a rats behind about these people. Those that don't take that fuel are foolish
I cant trust my husband? So I have had issues with my husband lying the past few months. Usually over stupid stuff. Im almost five months pregnant and had to fly home to virginia all the way from alaska where we live. When I came back I had a eight hour layover in anchorage. he told me he would drive six hours to get me so i didnt have to sleep in an airport being pregnant at all. He never showed. I called him and he told me he got called into work (hes army)..well needless to say I called his work and he lied to me. So i call him back and he told me he just didnt feel like driving to get me. I cant help but think something might have happened while i was gone. Also, just yesterday I found that he had a myspace he never told me about. I asked him why he didnt tell me and he said it wasnt his myspace, he didnt have one. Well i made him check his email and there ya go, myspace message notices all over his email. He was basically stuck in a corner and didnt have much to say. What do I do or say...? also, i didnt ask him to pick me up. It was his idea. I would have been fine with the layover. thats another thing that pissed me off.
How can I get my family to stop being so.... argh? Christmas break is coming up. My husband is currently stationed in Afghanistan, so I've been home alone (Colorado) with my pets since last January. My grandparents want me to fly to Alaska on December 16th and stay my entire vacation, which is an entire month. However, my husband has two weeks leave in January and we're meeting in Wisconsin where my mom and his family is located. Somehow, he's become the enemy to my grandparents and has ruined Christmas because he wants to see his mom and wants me to go to Wisconsin. I suggested that my grandparents come visit me for the holidays since they don't have pets, but they say they can't leave the house in winter. I then suggest flying from Anchorage to Chicago, but then my grandparents go on a tirade about it's so dangerous to fly or too dangerous for me to drive to the airport. I really don't know what to do without being a "bad" person. My grandparents are the ones that raised me, so I have divded loyalties. Any advice? I'd rather just worry about my finals than have to worry about family politics.
Cheapest flight from PDX,OR or SEA, WA to ANC, AK? I'm sure the title was a bit confusing, so let me elaborate. I just received a job offer at Anchorage, AK (Alaska) for summer job. I'm a student trying to enjoy the summer while earning money for another school year. I currently live in Portland (PDX), OR. I am finding few, if any, flight from PDX to ANC. It seems there are more available from Seattle, WA. I think the best option is for me to take Grayhound and spend $25 to reach Seattle, and take the plane from there. I have spent hours searching for best option. I would like to leave between 26th~30th, ealier the better. So for anyone who likes to research airfare, or has some experience doing so, it would truly help me a lot to figure out the most financially sound way to make the trip. 1) Which is cheaper, from PDX or SEA? 2) What is the cheapest rout? (One way, or round trip) 3) Would bus or ferry be possible alternative trip back home? Thank you for your time.

Details about relocating to Alaska? My wife and I are moving to Anchorage or Fairbanks with the Army. Can anyone give me some details about what it's like to live in these 2 cities? Also, pros and cons about driving the alcan or taking the ferry (traveling from Virginia). Our main concerns are the effect the weather will have on our lives, what type of vehicle we will need, the cost of renting a 1,500 square foot home (plus utilities), and the health of our newborn son, who has delicate lungs (was a preemie). Thank you for your attention to this matter. :) My son has to drive with us, because he can't handle the altitude change for an airplane yet.

Hi all! Got a cute joke here.please star if you like!? Dawson boarded an Alaska Airlines flight in Anchorage, Alaska bound for Dallas Fort Worth, Texas with a box of crabs for friends and family. A female crew member took it and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator, which she did. Dawson advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for the crabs staying frozen, and proceeded to rant and rave about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Shortly before landing, she announced to the entire cabin, "Would the gentleman who gave me the crabs in Anchorage, please raise your hand?" Not one hand went up, so she took them home and ate them herself!
looking for a particular snow globe...? Approx. two years ago, my children gave me a special limited edition snow globe that they bought at Nordstroms in Anchorage, Alaska. It was an actual scene of Anchorage and played "Born Free" when you wound it. They got it to remind me of home and I loved it - it had much meaning to me! Unfortunately, it was stolen and i would like to find another. Can anyone help me?
